The first land grants in the Mount Holly area were issued by King George II of Great Britain around 1750.

The Mount Holly Cotton Mill was the fourth textile mill built in Gaston County and is recognized today as the oldest surviving mill in the county.

The city gets its current name from the Mount Holly Cotton Mill, which was started in 1875. The mill, in turn, was named after the famed yarn made at a spinning mill in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

The area's post office was originally known as Woodlawn starting in 1838 before the town was officially incorporated as Mount Holly.
